Dollar Naik diatas 123 yen, tertinggi 4-1/2-tahun

US dollar menguat kembali terhadap yen, tertinggi sejak 4-1/2-tahun terhadap yen. Penguatan tersebut terutama di dorong oleh semakin naiknya U.S. Treasury yields akibat menguatnya data year-on-year U.S. core producer prices untuk bulan May.

Selama enam minggu terakhir, benchmark yield untuk periode 10-tahunan U.S. Treasury note ikut mengalami kenaikan hampir mendekati 60 basis points. Sebagian besar para trader berpendapat, “as dealers priced out any chance of a Federal Reserve interest rate cut, helping the dollar rally from record lows against the euro hit in late April.”

Market participants pun juga memulai mempertimbangkan adanya kenaikan interest rate di tahun ini untuk menahan laju inflasi. Data core producer price index (kecuali food dan energy cost) yang mestinya bisa mengangkat dollar, namun hanya menguat tipis dari 1.5 percent ke 1.6% untuk basis tahunannya. "This data feeds the market's mood swing," ujar Greg Anderson, senior currency strategist di ABN AMRO, Chicago. Pada pertengahan sesi New York kemarin, dollar sempat menyentuh 123.13 yen , tertinggi sejak Desember 2002, naik 0.3 percent dari Rabu kemarin serta 3.3 percent lebih tinggi pada awal tahun ini. Sedang euro melemah tipis terhadap dollar pada $1.3295. Terhadap yen, euro menguat 0.3 percent ke 163.70 yen .

"Critical support for euro/dollar comes in the $1.3250-70 area and we will find out if there is indeed a floor there ... if we get CPI tomorrow that's as big a surprise, we could test lower levels," imbuh Anderson. Dollar juga menguat terhadap Swiss Franc selama the sixth consecutive session, naik up 0.15 percent ke 1.2458 francs .

The franc, salah satu the lowest-yielding major currencies, tak bereaksi atas kenaikan revisi atas interest rate dari the Swiss National Bank's. "The SNB may see the domestic economy is in excellent shape but so is every other economy. So there is no room for (franc) out-performance," kata Adrian Hughes, currency strategist pada Societe Generale, London.

Kemarin, Australian dollar adalah satu-satunya “the biggest movers on the day among major currencies,” melemah 0.6 percent terhadap dollar pada US$0.8347 , pelemahan tersebut lebih banyak disebabkan oleh pernyataan dari governor the Reserve Bank of Australia bahwa, “the favorable near-term inflation outlook gave the bank more time to assess the need for higher interest rates.” Bank of Japan hari ini (Jum’at) juga mengumumkan interest ratenya. Tetap dengan keputusan unchange rates pada 0.5 percent. Namun, ekspetasi pasar menginginkan adanya kenaikan nanti pada bulan Agustus.
